What is Split System Air Conditioning?
Split system air conditioning units are one of the most common types of air conditioners found in Queensland homes. A split system unit is made up of two main components, the indoor unit and the outdoor unit which is why it is called a “split system”. The outdoor unit is installed on the wall of the room that the indoor unit will be installed in. The indoor and outdoor units are connected by a series of electrical wires and thin tubing or “lines”.
Unlike a window unit, this type of system requires professional installation due to the electrical components. This system keeps the hot air outside and the cool air inside by transporting all of the heat to the outdoor unit to cool the room as quickly as possible.
Our team at Advanced Climate Solutions have years of experience with split system air conditioning including installation, servicing, maintenance and repairs. For a free quote on any of our services call 0403 254 272 today.
How does it work?
A split system unit works similarly to most air conditioning units. It is made up of four main components:
- Compressor
- Evaporator
- Condenser
- Fan
Both the compressor and the condenser are in the outdoor unit with the evaporator and the fan stored in the indoor unit. When a split system air conditioning system is turned on the compressor begins to circulate a refrigerant gas. This pressurises the gas and as the gas is compressed its temperature reduces. Once it has been cooled, the pressurised refrigerant gas is directed toward the condenser. A cooling system inside the condenser removes the remaining heat from the refrigerant. During this process, the high-pressure gas is converted to liquid form.
The cold liquid is then circulated through to the indoor unit’s evaporator. Once the cool liquid is in the evaporator, the fan draws in warm air from the room. As the air flows over the cool refrigerant, the heat in the air is absorbed by the refrigerant. The cool air is then circulated back into the room. Once warmed, the refrigerant is sent back to the compressor in the outdoor unit.
This process is repeated until the thermostat in the indoor unit detects that the room has reached the preset temperature.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a split system air conditioner?
A split system air conditioner is made up of two main parts: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. The indoor unit delivers cooled or heated air into the room, while the outdoor unit removes heat from the space. The two units are connected by pipework and electrical wiring.
Is a split system air conditioner a good option for my home?
Split systems are a popular option for homes because they are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and well suited to cooling or heating individual rooms or smaller areas. They can be a great choice for individual rooms eg bedrooms, living areas, home offices, and smaller properties. If you are looking for a whole home cooling solution ducted air conditioning may be a better option for you depending on your budget and cooling requirements.
What is the difference between split system and ducted air conditioning?
A split system is designed to cool or heat a specific room or area, while ducted air conditioning is typically used to condition multiple rooms or the whole home through a network of ducts. The right option depends on your layout, budget, and how you use the space.
Do you install split system air conditioners?
Yes. Advanced Climate Solutions provides professional split system air conditioning installation for homes and businesses across Brisbane, the Redlands, Bayside, and Logan.
Do you also service and repair split systems?
Yes. We provide split system servicing, maintenance, and repairs, helping keep units running efficiently and reducing the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
How often should a split system air conditioner be serviced?
Most split system air conditioners should be professionally serviced at least once a year. Regular servicing helps maintain performance, improve efficiency, and identify issues early before they lead to larger repairs.
Can one outdoor unit run more than one indoor unit?
Yes. This is called a multi split system. A multi split setup allows multiple indoor units to connect to one outdoor unit, which can be useful for cooling more than one room without installing separate outdoor units for each space.
With a multi split system you can also plan ahead if you know that you want to install air conditioners into multiple rooms in the future but want to spread out the installation cost over time. This can be acheived by selecting the right outdoor unit at the start. Talk to one of our team members to find out more about Multi Split Systems.
Do you work with residential and commercial split systems?
Yes. We work with both residential and commercial customers and provide split system air conditioning solutions for homes, offices, shops, and other commercial spaces.
Do you provide free quotes for split system installation?
Yes. If you are considering a new split system air conditioner, Advanced Climate Solutions can provide expert advice and a free quote tailored to your property and needs.
