If your air conditioner is anywhere near the coastline, corrosion is something you want to keep an eye on. Across the Redlands, Bayside, and Greater Brisbane, outdoor air conditioning units cop a fair bit from the weather. Salt air, humidity, rain, heat, and time can all start eating away at the unit, especially around the copper and outdoor components. 

A lot of the time, people do not think about it until there is already a problem. The unit might still be running. It might still turn on. It might still feel like it is cooling the house. But corrosion can be sitting there quietly, and once it gets into the wrong part of the system, it can turn into a very expensive repair.

Why Corrosion Is A Problem For Air Conditioners

Corrosion can happen on any air conditioning system, but it is more common when the unit is near the coastline or has not been maintained properly. We see it a lot. A lot of the time, when ACS comes across units that are new to us and they have been poorly maintained, or the servicing has been dragged out, corrosion is one of the first things that shows up. The issue is that corrosion does not always look like a major problem to the customer straight away. The air conditioner might just stop cooling properly. It might start losing gas. It might need a call out because it is not performing like it used to.

Then when we get to site and ask, “When was your last service?” a lot of the time the answer is, “We haven’t been getting it serviced.” That is usually when you know where the problem is heading.

The Copper Is Where It Can Get Expensive

The big issue with corrosion is when it starts affecting the copper. If corrosion gets into the copper, you can lose the refrigerant gas that is in the system. Once that happens, it is no longer just a little clean-up job or a quick service. It can become a costly repair. A lot of the time, the drains block up first. They might still drain a little bit, but water starts sitting inside the indoor unit. Then the copper is sitting in water, and it just corrodes and corrodes. Eventually, you can get to the point where the whole coil has to be replaced. That is where the costs can really jump.

You could be looking at around two grand for the coil, then another two grand for the gas plus labour. It depends on the system, but either way, it is not the sort of repair most people want to be surprised with. Aircons are a significant investment, a ducted air conditioner is nearly the price of a small car really, so it makes sense to employ preventative measures and look after it before it gets to that stage.

What The Anti-Corrosion Service Does

The anti-corrosion service is about slowing down that corrosion process and giving the unit some extra protection. We use a special spray that helps protect the unit against corrosion. It is especially useful for homes and businesses around the coastline, bayside suburbs, and areas where the outdoor unit is more exposed to salt air and weather.

The spray itself is not very expensive. You are generally looking at labour time and around $50 a can, and some units may take up to two cans to spray it properly. This can be done during a service or with a call out and labour, but compared to the cost of replacing a coil, gas, and labour later, it is a low cost for a big bit of protection. Generally, the spray can last up to three to four years. It just depends on the weather, where the unit is positioned, and how exposed it is.

Anti-Corrosion Treatment And Regular Servicing Work Together

Anti-corrosion treatment is not a replacement for servicing, it is something that works best alongside proper maintenance. If the filters are blocked, drains are blocked, water is sitting in the indoor unit, and the system is not being checked, corrosion can still become a problem. That is why annual servicing matters.

During a service, ACS checks the system properly. We look at the pressures, drains, coils, fans, electrical tests, and the general condition of the unit. We flush the drains as part of the service because blocked drains are one of those things that can cause much bigger problems if they are left alone. A clean is just a clean, a service is a service and anti-corrosion is another layer of protection when the unit needs it. When all of those things are looked after properly, you give the air conditioner a much better chance of lasting.

What Happens If You Leave It Too Long?

The frustrating thing with corrosion is that by the time the customer notices something is wrong, the damage may already be done. We see it pretty regularly. Someone calls up because the unit is not cooling properly, or another company has been servicing it and the same problem keeps happening. Sometimes the manufacturer gets us involved because we are the preferred agent. We go to site, check the system properly, and find multiple issues that have not been looked at.

That is where trust comes into it. A quick operator might just say “serviced air conditioner” on the invoice and move on. With us, we actually show you what we have done. We take photos where needed. We look over the system properly. If something is starting to corrode, we will tell you. The earlier we catch it, the better chance you have of slowing it down.

Is Anti-Corrosion Treatment Worth It?

If your air conditioning unit is in a protected spot and there are no signs of corrosion, you might not need it straight away. If your unit is near the coastline, exposed to weather, or already starting to show signs of corrosion, it is worth considering. It is one of those things where the small cost now can help protect you from a much bigger cost later.

And when a coil, gas, and labour can run into thousands, a corrosion spray during maintenance is a lot easier to deal with than a major repair after the damage is already done.
