Frequently Asked Questions
-
What size air conditioner do I need?
To find out what size air conditioner you need, multiply the area of the room by 0.15kW. To calculate the area of a room, multiply the length of the room by the width of the room. For example, a room that is 4 metres wide and 5 metres long:
4m x 5m = 20sqm
So the room would have an area of 20 metres squared.
Once you have calculated the area of the room, you will need to multiply it by 0.15kW to get the size of the air conditioner required. Continuing with the same example, if your room is 20 metres squared:
20 x 0.15 kW = 3kW
So, you will need a 3kW air conditioner to cool the room.
Note: this is a general calculation to be used for rooms with a standard ceiling height of 2.4 metres and average window sizes

How often should I change the filter in my air conditioner?
Generally, the filter in a home air conditioner should be changed once every season or four times a year. However, depending on the environment and air purity you may need to change the filter more regularly.
For commercial air conditioners, the filter should be changed approximately once a month. However, you may need to change it more regularly depending on use.
Top Tip: Check the filter in your air conditioner about twice as often as it is recommended that you replace it until you have a good idea of how long it takes for the filter in your air conditioner to get dirty or clogged. (Eg. for a home air conditioner, check the condition of the filter every 6 weeks).
-
Is my air conditioner too old to fix?
If your air conditioner needs repairs and is over 10 years old, it will most likely be more prudent to replace it rather than repair it. This is because the older the unit gets, the less efficient it will be and the more repairs it is likely to need until it finally breaks down.
Plus, modern air conditioners are far more energy efficient that the best AC units 10 years ago, so installing a new air conditioner could save you a lot of money in running costs.
However, a well maintained air conditioner can last much longer than 10 years so ask your local air conditioning expert for their recommendation.
-
How long does an air conditioner last?
The average lifespan of a central air conditioner is somewhere between 10 to 12 years. However, if your air conditioner is regularly serviced by a professional it may last much longer than 10 years.
Conversely, a poorly maintained air conditioner may breakdown much earlier than expected.
-
How often should my air conditioner be serviced?
A domestic air conditioner installed in standard conditions should be professionally serviced at least once a year.
Commercial air conditioners may require professional maintenance anywhere from once a year to once a month, depending on the environment and use. Talk to your local air conditioning expert for advice on how often your commercial air conditioner should be serviced.

What is a split system air conditioner?
A split system air conditioner is the wall mounted unit that people usually think of when the term “air conditioner” is mentioned. Split system air conditioners are used to cool one room or area.
The name “split system” comes from the fact that there is an indoor unit (this is the wall-mounted unit where the cool air comes out) and an outdoor unit (usually located on the outside of the same wall as the indoor unit).
There are a few other types of split system air conditioners including:
Reverse cycle split system air conditioners – this is a split system unit that can produce both cool and warm air for year round use.
Multi split system air conditioners – this is a split system unit with multiple indoor units powered by a single outdoor unit.
-
What is ducted air conditioning?
A ducted air conditioner is a central cooling system that is used to cool multiple rooms or a whole house. As the name suggests, cool air is distributed throughout the house via a series of ducts, usually located in the roof.
Ducted air conditioning is generally a more cost-efficient way to cool an entire house rather than installing split system units in each room.

Can I install my own air conditioner?
If an air conditioner is installed incorrectly it can reduce the lifespan of the unit and affect its energy efficiency.
If that’s not enough to convince you not to install your own air conditioner, it’s illegal in Queensland for an unqualified person to install their own air conditioner and it will also void any warranty that came with the unit.
