Unfortunately, your air conditioner is most likely to break down during summer when it is getting the most use. However, this is the busiest time of the year for air conditioning technicians which means you could be waiting days or even weeks before your air conditioner is back up and running. That’s why we’ve put together our top tips on what to do when your air conditioner breaks down.

Check The Remote
The first thing to check when your air conditioner stops working is the remote control. It could be a simple case of the batteries in the remote going flat, resulting in the air conditioner not turning one.
If changing the batteries in the remote doesn’t do the job, try downloading a universal remote app and using that to turn on the air conditioner. If the app works, there is something wrong with the air conditioner remote and it may need replacing.
Note: Universal remote control apps will only work for some air conditioner models made by certain manufacturers.
Check Circuit Breaker
If the remote control appears to be working fine, check the circuit breaker. It’s quite common for a surge of electricity in the air conditioner to trip the circuit breaker resulting on power to the air conditioning unit being cut off. To check this, simply go to the circuit breaker and check if the switch has been flipped. If it has, flip it back and your air conditioner should be back to working as normal.
Check For Damage
Once you have ruled out the remote control and the circuit breaker, inspect your air conditioning unit for any visible damage. Common signs of damage include leaking tubes, rust, or smoke and debris around the outdoor unit. If you find evidence of water or electrical damage such as the signs mentioned above you will need t o contact your local air conditioning company for professional repairs.
Check The Warranty
If there is no visible way for you to fix your broken down air conditioner yourself (such as by resetting the circuit breaker or replacing the remote control batteries) you will need to contact a professional HVAC company for repairs.
Before doing this, check the warranty of your air conditioning unit. Having to pay to repair or replace an air conditioner can be costly, particularly in summer, so it’s worth taking the time to check if your AC is covered by warranty.
Air conditioner warranties can vary from 12 months to 10 years so you may find that your air conditioner is still under warranty even though it was installed years ago. As well as checking the warranty period, check the terms and conditions of the warranty to confirm that your unit is eligible for repairs/replacement under the warranty.
Call A 24/7 Air Conditioning Service
After you have performed each of the checks listed above it’s time to call your local air conditioning company. Make sure you choose an air conditioning company that offers 24/7 breakdown response as, if your air conditioner breaks down on a Friday night in the middle of summer you don’t want to have to spend all weekend in an uncomfortably hot home waiting for the repairman to show up Monday morning.
