Should I Repair Or Replace My Air Conditioner?
If you’re not sure whether to repair or replace your air conditioner ask yourself the following questions:
1) How Old Is The Air Conditioner?
When deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner, consider the age of the unit. Air conditioners typically have a lifespan of 10 – 15 years. So if your air conditioner requires repairs, and is over 15 years old, in most cases it will be best to replace rather than repair. This is because an older unit will likely require repairs more often, so it’s better to replace the unit with a new, more efficient AC, than to pour more money into an old air conditioner that could be driving up your power bills.
2) Has Your Power Bill Started Going Up?
Another factor to consider when determining the best course of action for your broken down air conditioner is your energy bill. Have you noticed that your power bill has been going up when your rates haven’t changed? This could be a sign that your air conditioner has started to run less efficiently, and for longer periods of time, meaning it may need to be replaced.
3) Does Your Air Conditioner Still Cool Effectively?
Air conditioners lose efficiency over time due to general wear and tear on the components. This means that if your air conditioner is nearing the end of its lifespan, and you’ve noticed that it is no longer effectively cooling your home, it might be time for a replacement.
4) Repair Cost x AC Age = $5000?
A general rule to use when deciding whether your air conditioner is worth repairing is to multiply the cost of repair by the age of the air conditioner (in years). If the result is more than $5000, you should seriously consider replacing your AC.
For example, if you’re quoted $495 for repairs, and your air conditioner is 15 years old, 495 x 15 = $7425. This means that it’s likely more financially prudent to replace your air conditioner than to repair it. Conversely, if the sum of the repairs and the age of the air conditioner is less than $5000, it may still be worth repairing.
